Apologies, this event is now cancelled. We will look into rearranging this for another time.

There has been increasing attention to the mental health impacts of the pandemic on young people's lives in the UK. However, much research explores these impacts from an epidemiological perspective, which excludes understandings of lived experiences of contexts which feed into the experiences of distress and development of disorder. Drawing on repeated focus group data with 40 young people (16-25) from racialised backgrounds in London, this talk will present an analysis of social and political drivers of emotional distress and poor mental health linked to the pandemic. It concludes with discussion and presentation of strategies suggested by young people to target mental and emotional distress in their lives, and implications for rethinking mental health services in the UK more broadly in the wake of the pandemic.

The Division of Psychiatry monthly seminars showcase the latest mental health research that will be of interest to students and staff at UCL. We invite researchers from diverse occupational backgrounds with a wide range of topics presented throughout the year.
