Student profile - Sebastian Abudoj

Name: Sebastian Abudoj
Country of Domicile: Chile

Degree: LLM

What are you studying, why are you interested in this subject and what do you plan to do in the future?

I am pursuing the Master of Law in its Corporate Law Specialism, studying Corporate Governance, International Law of Foreign Investment and Competition Law. I got interested in these topics because they linked aspects of economic development, fairer markets, and the most relevant legislation/regulations from an international perspective.

In the future, I would like to apply this knowledge and experience in an international forum, whether from a law firm or a public institution.

If you could go back in time to before you applied to UCL would there, be any advice you would give yourself about applying for your masters?

Study in advance some basic readings regarding the modules that you will finally choose, so you can feel well connected with the topics from the beginning of the LLM. Moreover, to be in London at least one month in advance because settling down could be a very time-consuming process. Regarding the application itself, the most relevant is to commence it since it is available on the website and even before, considering all the documents required and stages of the process.

What was your biggest challenge to coming to study in the UK and how did you overcome this?

My biggest challenge was to cut down or suspend my previous labour or personal commitments, so I recommend doing that before arriving in the UK or starting the program. The LLM is really a full-time program and requires being entirely focused on it.

Have you discovered any hidden gems during your time at UCL and in London?

London has many great places to visit and for all types of people. Moreover, UCL has a unique location that allows students to visit the city while doing their program.

What would it surprise people to know about you?

That I have been mostly studying, so quiet and sited, and not moving around or doing things. I am very active, and I have had to focus my energies in a different way now.

Do you have anything further you would like to add/share?

I recommend applying and being part of the UCL community. Plus, being one of the best universities in the world, UCL really has a great teaching style focused on raising the policy aspects of the issues, the current debates, and the impact of our potential professional performance in the world. Additionally, critical thinking and personal-grounded opinions are always encouraged at UCL.
