Student profile - Kean Spencer

Describe your time at UCL in three words: Immersive, profound, fun.

Kean Spencer

BA History Politics and Economics

Portland, Oregon, USA

What attracted you to UCL?

UCL has been much more engaging than my high school. I feel as if I can have meaningful and intellectual conversations with my professors about topics they specialise in; it’s like talking to an open encyclopaedia.

What aspects of your studies do you enjoy the most?

The aspect of my studies I enjoy the most are tutorials. Due to the nature of my course, my tutorials tend to be more discussion-based which is where I believe I thrive the most. The clashing of ideas and different opinions is exciting and educational for me.

Spencer Kean - UCL Student

What makes you most proud to be a UCL student?

UCL’s world reputation and sense of community.

Who inspires you most at UCL and why?

My classmates in the Student Centre inspire me. Seeing hundreds of students studying and trying to pursue their dreams really gives me the extra push to work harder on my projects and reach out to prospective employers.

What are some of the most interesting things you have done, seen, or got involved with while at UCL?

Societies and Student Union events are the two things that best describe my social life and life outside of just studying and taking exams. Societies have been a great way for me to meet new people and has led to many amazing and fun experiences. I have joined the Poker Society and taken part in socials, and the Jazz Society has also introduced me to some of the finest jazz establishments in London like Ronnie Scott’s! Moral of the story: join as many societies as possible!

What advice would you give to a student considering UCL?

Apply and make sure you put as much effort in your UCAS personal statement as possible. The application process is quite daunting at first, yes, but there is literally nothing to lose by applying.

How has being at UCL changed you and the way you think about yourself?

I’ve grown exponentially as a student, thinker, and most importantly, person. I can thank UCL for a significant portion of that.

What are your future ambitions and how do you think that being a UCL student will help you get there?

My goal after UCL is to either obtain a master’s degree or to start my career in the finance sector. I am quite confident that I will feel comfortable and prepared enough after my time at UCL to succeed in whatever I pursue.
