Institute for the Physics of Living Systems

Biological Physics Module Details

The following Biological Physics modules are availble to students who take the MSc in Physics:

Physical Models of Life (PHAS0078)

The students will be given background in Physical theories developed specifically for understanding Biological Systems. As these systems function out of equilibrium, very different and novel physical properties emerge that are not covered by classical physics.

[Taught in term 2]

Molecular Biophysics (PHAS0103)

The aim of this module is to provide the student with a knowledge and understanding of physical concepts which are relevant for understanding biology at the micro- and nano-scale and how these concepts are applied to describe various processes in the biological cell. This module provides an insight into the molecular machinery of biological cells. Concepts will be introduced through studying bio-molecular structure, DNA packing in the genome, molecular motors and neural signalling.
