Doctorate in Educational and Child Psychology

Our 3 Year Full-Time Programme of Professional Training

UCL has a long standing reputation for innovation and excellence in professional training in Educational Psychology and our mission is to equip you to seize both current and future opportunities through training you as applied educational and child psychologists able to practice innovatively, accountably and reflectively within local authority services and other rewarding settings. The provision of Childrens' Services and the role and training of Educational Psychologists is currently experiencing a period of change, questioning established practices and moving towards increasingly accountable, evidence-based, inclusive approaches to meeting childrens' and families' needs.

The UCL Doctorate in Educational & Child Psychology offers many benefits including:

Structure

The overall aim of our programme is to enable trainee educational psychologists to effectively integrate theory and practice and become skilled and accountable professional practitioners, eligible for registration with the Health Professions Council and Chartered status with the British Psychological Society. The programme is structured to achieve this aim as follows.

Year 1:

Knowledge and skill development in Problem Based Learning (PBL), seminar and workshop sessions at UCL (2-3 days/week)

Independent study (1-2 days/week).

Group placement with UCL tutor (1-2 days/week).

Year 2:

Skill and Knowledge sessions at UCL (Block of 3 days per month).

Research and independent study/IT enabled individual and small group tutorials (5 days/month).

Placement with Local Authority (12 days/month).

Year 3:

Skill and Knowledge sessions at UCL (2 blocks of 3 days per term)

Research and independent study/IT enabled individual and small group tutorials (6 days/month).

Placement with Local Authority (12 days/month).

Please note that this is a full-time intensive 3 year course and we do not offer a part-time option or Masters (in 2009 the Health Professions Council set the threshold level of qualification for entry to the register for Educational Psychologists at 'Professional Doctorate or Equivalent').
