Introduction to multimedia annotation using ELAN

Overview

This one day course provides an overview of the multimedia annotation tool, ELAN, used for aligning audio and video to text transcriptions. It is aimed at anyone with an interest in researching language and communication using extended spontaneous language recordings, including narratives and conversation. DCAL has extensive experience with ELAN, particularly for the purposes of annotating the BSL Corpus. The course is taught by one or more members of the BSL Corpus team, including Prof. Kearsy Cormier and Sannah Gulamani.

Topics include:

  • Overview of ELAN as a tool for multimedia annotation
  • Demonstrations of how it is used to research multimodal spoken language (including speech and gesture) and also sign languages
  • Hands-on practical lessons in getting started with: attaching a new annotation file to media files, creating an annotation template, navigating, creating and dividing annotations, importing existing transcriptions
