The impact of continuous calorie restriction and fasting on cognition in adults without eating disorders (pre-print; John O’Leary, Chloé Georgeaux-Healy, Lucy Serpell)
Abstract
Research into the effects of calorie restriction continues to excite those interested in whether it may allow humans to live longer and healthier lives. Animal studies of continuous calorie restriction and fasting have demonstrated significant advantages to health and longevity, yet concerns remain over the impact of restricting calorie intake on human health and cognition. This review begins by explaining why there is such interest in the restriction of calorie intake, and how intermittent fasting has become popularised as a potential route to longevity in humans. The literature is reviewed specifically relating to the impact of fasting on cognitive function. There are mixed findings regarding the impact on this aspect of human functioning, suggesting further research is required to understand the costs and benefits of different types of calorie restriction.
