Research summary
Primary research interests are in the development of improved interventions for the treatment of personality disorder. This includes increasing understanding of hte aetiology of personality disorders, mechanisms of maintenance and change, and intergenerational transmission of personality disorders.
Current research focusses on adaptations of Dialectical Behavioural Therapy and Cognitive Behaivoural Therapy for a wider range of presentations and comorbidity with personality disorder.
Further research looks at brain mechanisms underpinning personality disorder using fMRI and behavioural tests.
Intergenerational research includes evaluation and adaptation of Mellow Parenting for mothers with personality disorder, developing an understanding and intervention for fathers with personality disorder, and evaluating training for health visitors.

Teaching includes: recognition and diagnosis of personality disorder, evidence based treatments for personality disorder, DBT for personality disorder, CBT for personality disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress disorder (PTSD), childhood sexual abuse, neuropsychological assessment, assessment and management of suicide and deliberate self harm, CBT supervision for supervisors, developing service related research for clinical psychology supervisors.

Senior lecturer on the doctorate in clinical psychology and strategic and clinical lead for personality disorders for North East London Foundation Trust. Senior international trainer in DBT for British Isles DBT. Clinical lead for the North East London Foundation Trust IAPT SMI demonstration site. Honorary senior lecturer for Bangor University supporting the PG certificate in DBT. Member of the North East London R&D department, and UCL Partners.
