"For children like this, with relatively severe reading problems, [the change seen] is of little, if any, educational significance," said Professor Charles Hulme (UCL Developmental Science). "I think this trial is too brief - only 16 weeks - to have a realistic chance of finding effects on reading, even if they exist."

The UCL Academy, a state comprehensive set up in a partnership between Camden council and UCL, admitted its first pupils this morning. "We're trying to break out of the old model of how schools have to be run," said Geraldine Davies, the UCL academy's principal.
