In 1997 I was commissioned by the Council for Heads of Medical Schools (CHMS; now the Medical Schools Council)
to assess whether applicants from ethnic minorities were disadvantaged
during the process of selection for medical school. The study, which
analysed data provided by UCAS on all applications for admission in
1996 and 1997, was to prove somewhat controversial. It was published as
a report in the British Medical Journal, and the full report was published by CHMS on its website.
