Partner in Murray Brothers (q.v.), of Liverpool and Georgetown, British Guiana, awarded part of the compensation for 32 enslaved people at Water Street and probably also awardee as sequestrator of Pln Henrietta and under a third smaller award in British Guiana.

  1. Will of Matthew Steele merchant of Liverpool and Seaforth who died 02/10/1860 proved 16/12/1862 by Alexander Garnett banker of Georgetown Demerary, effects under £10000.

  2. In the 1841 census, Matthew Steele aged 40 merchant born F[oreign parts] was living in St James Walk, Mount Gardens, Mount Pleasant Liverpool with wife Sophia and children Jane 7, Edward 5,  George 4, Matthew 2 and Isabella 1.

  3. In 1891, the son Matthew Steele born British Guiana aged 52 was shown living at Newton Hall, Newton Cheshire Retired Doctor of Medicine, JP and alkali manufacturer, with wife Adelaide aged 42, children (all born in England) and nephew Walter civil service cerk at Georgetown, born Georgetown, aged 22.
