Biography

Partner in the London banking firm of Whitmore, Wells and Whitmore (q.v.) which failed in 1841.

  1. Born 03/08/1803 and baptised 01/06/1804 at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, East London. Parents were John Wells (q.v.), a banker and politician, and Esther, daughter of John Puget, a banker.

  2. Married Julia Cooke, 07/06/1832 at St George's Hanover Square. In 1841 he was living at Widmore, Bromley, Kent, age 37, Banker, with his wife Julia, 29, children Julia 6, Frances 5, Margaret 3, Vincent 1 and Ernest 3 months, 8 female servants and 2 male servants. In 1851 he was living at Southborough Lodge, Bromley, Kent, age 45, "Landed Proprietor & Magistrate", with wife Julia, children Horatio 5 and Eleanor 11 months, 7 female servants and 1 male servant.

  3. John and Julia had at least 10 children, Julia (1833-), John Campion (1834-), Frances Anne (1835-), Margaret (1838=), Vincent (1840-), Ernest (1841-), Josephine (1842-), Horatio (1845-), Eleanor (1850-), and Caroline Sibella (dates unknown) .

  4. "[Death" On the 4th inst., at St Leonards-on-Sea, John Joseph Wells, Esq., of Southborough-lodge, Kent, aged 54."

Caroline Sibella Wallroth died in 1929 age 81, suggesting a birth date c. 1848 (FreeUKGen, England and Wales Free BMD Database, Deaths, 1837-1983 [database online]).
