Biography

London West India merchant, partner with his brothers William and Rowland in W. R. & S. Mitchell (q.v.). He died just before the bankruptcy of his brother and surviving partner Rowland in 1841: it is not clear how this failure impacted his estate.

  1. Baptism of Samuel Mitchell son of David Mitchell and Ann Hewitt of John Street at St Andrew Holborn 09/10/1792.

  2. Death of Samuel Mitchell registered Q3 1841 at Marylebone; burial at All Souls Kensal Green of Samuel Mitchell aged 49 of 13 Cornwall Terrace Marylebone 21/08/1841; will proven 28/12/1841.

  3. Will of Samuel Mitchell of [13 Cornwall Terrace, Regents Park] St Marylebone [made in 1829 with codicils of 1831 and 1836] proved 28/12/1841. In the will he left his leasehold house at Cornwall Terrace and an annuity of £1200 p.a. to his wife Sarah (£500 p.a if she remarried), and an annuity of £100 p.a. to his sister Mary Ann Georges, wife of Henry Georges Esq., and an annuity of £100 p.a. also to Mrs Ann Sukering [sp?] of 20 Weymouth Street [with no explanation]. His executors were his brothers John and Francis Henry Mitchell, and his brother-in-law John Barnard. He left his residuary estate to his children if any, failing whom the property was to pass to the children of his deceased brother William, except William Murray Mitchell, the eldest son, to whom the real estate of his brother William Mitchell had descended. He was, he said in partnership with his brother Rowland and Henry Rodon as merchants trading to the West Indies at Lime Street, in which business he was entitled to 13/64ths of the capital stock and profits: he gave his executors authority to call in his interest if required to meet his legacies, otherwise to leave it in the partnership. In a codicil of 1831 he increased his wife's annuity if remarried to £700 p.a; in a further codicil of 1836 he revoked the annuity to his sister Mary Ann Georges and instead left £100 p.a. to another sister Martha Hewitt Roberts, wife of Rev. Walter Cramer Roberts.
