Biography

London merchant, partner with Isaac Westmorland in Stewart and Westmorland (q.v.), large-scale mortgagee and owner of enslaved people in Jamaica.

  1. Will of Alexander Stewart merchant of Winchester House City of London proved 14/05/1857.  Alexander Stewart of 5 Cambridge Square Paddington buried 01/04/1857 aged 79 at All Souls Kensal Green: the 1851 census shows Alexander Stewart 'General merchant' aged 72 born Scotland  living 5 Cambridge Square with wife Agnes and children Agnes (30, born Finsbury - Stewart and Westmorland was at Finsbury Square in the early 1820s), Alexander (28), Mary (22) Elizabeth (18) and Louisa (17).

  2. Born 15/09/1778, son of Peter Stewart of Huntingtower Perthshire and Jane Pick. Married 1818 Agnes (d. 1881) daughter of William Logan of Clarkstone Stirlingshire (five sons, six daughters). West Indies planter and merchant. Winchester House Old Broad Street, City of London and No. 5 Cambridge Square Hyde Park Middlesex. He also had a residence at Grove House, Woodford Essex. Died 25/03/1857 leaving £120,000. His son, also named Alexander Stewart, and shown in 1861 as 'W.I. merchant', died of Fowkes Buildings and 9 Daleham Road Hampstead in 1909 leaving £223,721 12s 2d. A second son, Lewes Gower Stewart, left £75,587 6s 7d when he died at Mt Pleasant, Ilfracombe in 1915; and his daughter Elizabeth Gower Stewart left £49,177 2s 8d when she died of 5 Chester Terrace in 1900. Another son, Capt. James Stewart, bought the Alltyrodyn estate in Cardiganshire c. 1880.

Rubinstein gives his firm as Edward & John Stewart, merchants of Winchester House Old Broad Street from an 1825 directory and Stewart & Co., merchants of the same address, from an 1840 directory. The 1840 and 1850 P.O. Directories however show 'A . Stewart and Westmorland' at Winchester House. National Probate Calendar 1857, 1909, 1915, 1900. Alexr Stewart, born Woodford aged 78 'living on own means' was at 9 Daleham Gardens in the 1901 census.
