James Blaw became overseer of the Blue Mountain plantation belonging to William Perrin around 1766, probably appointed as part of an Orkney network by his kinsman Malcolm Laing of Kingston (q.v.). By 1776 he had acquired a gang of 49 enslaved people on his own account and sold them for £3071. He returned to Scotland and died there c. 1801, leaving monetary legacies of £20,000 to two sisters and several nephews and nieces. His sister Barbara had married Robert Laing of Orkney.
