Biography

In 1774 John Aylett Stowe [sic] purchased an annuity of £50 p.a. for the lives of Ann Hawker and Mary Steward. In the Master's Report of 24/07/1837 in the Chancery suit of Neave v Miller, the executors of Robert Raynsford, claiming under the will of John Aylett Stowe [sic], were shown as entitled to the annuity or arrears of the annuity.

  1. Will of John Aylett Stow of St Andrew Holborn proved 20/06/1781. He left to his wife £500, an annuity of £200 p.a. and a further annuity during her widowhood of £100 p.a. 'at the desire of Miss Steward.' He left to Miss Steward all his real estate (apart from his property in Brentford, including Brentford Wharf and 1/3rd of Brentford Butts, which he left to Mrs Ann Swift for life and then to Mr John Andrews). He said that he was entitled to an annuity of £100 p.a. for the life of Ann Swift widow and Mary Steward and a further £50 p.a. on the life of Mary Steward, these annuities secured by 'a conveyance of certain lands, plantations and other things [sic] on the Island of Antigua' and also by the bond of Edward Codrington late of London merchant; and also to an annuity of £50 p.a during the lives of Ann the wife of the Rev. Charles Cowley (late Ann Hawker spinster), secured on 'conveyance of certain lands, plantations and other things [sic] on the Island of Nevis' and also by the bond of John Mills and Shoreland [sic] Swanston of London, to which last-mentioned annuity Ann Cowley was entitled to a half during the joint lives and to the whole if she was the survivor (otherwise it would belong to Stow): he left his interest in these annuities to Mary Steward, together with a separate revisionary interest in £100 p.a. long annuities after the death of 'Miss Cornewall'. He ordered his executors to lay out 5 guineas for a picture of 'the Viper' biting the hand that saved it from perishing in the in the Snow and present it to Edward Bearcroft, Kings Counsel in lieu of the £3000 he had intended to leave him. He made his wife and Miss Mary Steward his residuary legatees. In a codicil of 1778 he revoked the appointment of Mary Steward as executor alongside his wife.
