Sir Alexander Mackenzie of Darien

Biography

Alexander Mackenzie of Darien, only son and heir of George Mackenzie by Janet, daughter of the Rev. Linen, Minister of Fairnby (which George was 4th son of John Mackenzie of Ord, Ross-shire. Born in Scotland in 1663. Took an active part in the Darien expedition (1698-1700) and is stated to have been created a Baronet 22/02/1702/3 and described as "of Darien". He was implicated in the Jacobite Rising of 1715, and though never attainted, appears to have discontinued the use of the title. He settled in Jamaica and obtained an estate situated in Clarendon there, which he named Farenough. He married there, in January 1709-10, Mary, daughter of Arthur Jenners, by Grisell his wife. He died in Jamaica, 20/12/1744 aged 81. His widow, who was born in Jamaica, 26/04/1688 and baptised 08/08/1690, died there 25/11/1759. He was suceeded by Sir George Mackenzie (1711-c. 1780), his only son.
