Biography

  1. "Free negro" woman with whom William Surgeon lived "a great number of years". They had six children together: Sarah, Margaret, William, Elizabeth, Susannah and John. William Surgeon died c. 1774 and bequeathed over 500 acres of land to Sarah and their children. William Surgeon also bqueathed one enslaved person each to Sarah and four of her children: Margaret, William, Susannah and John.

  2. Sarah Surgeon of Kingston, free negro woman. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1783. Slave-ownership at probate: 2 of whom 0 were listed as male and 2 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £140 Jamaican currency of which £140 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £0 currency debts and £0 currency plate.
