Biography

Son of Jonathan Gale and his wife Margaret Crawford.

  1. Jonathan Gale married Gibbons Morant in Clarendon 28/06/1733.

  2. Five children were baptised to Jonathan and Gibbons Gale: Eleanor (baptised in St Andrew 1734, she later married Francis Coke and was dead by 1764); Col. Henry Gale (1737-1767, of Salt Springs, MA for St Elizabeth 1760, 1765-1766); Jonathan (born 16/1/1737/8 and baptised in St Andrew 22/2/1737/8; dead by 1747 when a private Act of the Jamaican legislature described Henry, supra, as his father’s only son and heir); Morant (twin with Jonathan; bapt. at same time); Gibbons (born 10/05/1739 and baptised in Vere 22/06/1739, described as her father’s posthumous dauughter, “Miss Gibbons Gale” was buried at Vere 04/07/1761).

  3. Jonathan Gale of St Elizabeth, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1742. Slave-ownership at probate: 263 of whom 143 were listed as male and 120 as female. 95 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £17992.13 Jamaican currency of which £7877 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £2546.49 currency debts and £12 currency plate.
