Sir John Aubrey bart.

4th Jun 1739 - 14th Mar 1826

Biography

1st son of Sir Thomas Aubrey, 5th Bt., of Boarstall, Buckinghamshire and Llantrithyd, Glamorgan and Martha, daughter of Richard Carter of Chilton, Buckinghamshire.

Married 9 March 1771 (1) Mary (d. 14 June 1781), daughter of Sir James Colebrooke, 1st Bt.; (2) 26 May 1783, Martha Catherine (his 1st cousin), daughter of George Richard Carter of Chilton. Succeeded his father as 6th Bt. 4 Sept. 1786.

MP for seven different constituencies between 1768 and 1826, dying as the Father of the House. The sale of the mortgage interest of Earl and Countess Tankerville and Sir John Aubrey bart. in Sir George Colebrooke's estates [and enslaved people] on Antigua announced on 30/07/1796 for 27/08/1796 was cancelled 13/08/1796 without explanation. Sir George Colebrooke's nieces had married Charles Earl of Tankerville and Sir John Aubrey, but the nature of their 'mortgage interest' has yet to be established by LBS.

Aubrey appears to have had little connection to slave-owning apart from possibly the above; he was also, on the other hand, a staunch advocate of the abolition of the slave trade in 1807.
