Thomas Dehany Bernard

Biography

Son of Charles Bernard of Frampton Lodge and his wife Margaret nee Baker. He has an entry in the ODNB as 'Church of England clergyman.' Under his father's will he co-inherited one moiety of the Eden estate in St James [and the enslaved people attached to it] with his brother Charles.

  1. Thomas Dehany Bernard, son of Charles Bernard, gentleman, and his wife Margaret Ann, was baptised in Clifton, Gloucestershire, 07/03/1816. He matriculated Exeter College, Oxford, in 1833 aged 18; BA 1837, MA 1840. Curate of Great Baddowe, Essex, 1840-1 and vicar there 1841-1846; rector of Terling, Essex in 1848. Rector of Walcot, Bath, 1863-1867; prebendary of Haselbere-in-Wells cathedral from 1867; cannon of Wells cathedral from 1868 and chancellor from 1879.

  2. He married Caroline Linthorne in Wimborne, Dorset, in 1841; they had at least nine children born between 1842 and 1858. In 1861 he was living at the Abbey, Woodbridge, Suffolk, with his wife, nine children, a governess and six female servants. He was living at Northfield House, Walcot, in the censuses of 1871 and 1881, at Barnsley, Wimborne Minster, Dorset in 1891 and High Hall, Pamphill, Wimborne in 1901. He died at High Hall 07/12/1904, effects £62,808 11s 1d.

  3. Thomas Dehany Bernard's daughter Agnes Jane married Rev. Charles D'Aguilar Lawrence (son of Rev. Charles Washington Lawrence, grandson of Charles Lawrence (q.v.)) in 1882 at the Bernard family seat, Walcot, Somerset. Rev. Charles D'Aguilar Lawrence left £165,708 10s 11d when he died in 1935.
