Penelope Newell Law (née Hepburn)

???? - 1833

Biography

Daughter of William Hepburn (q.v.). The Papers of William Berry (Writer to the Signet) in the University of St Andrews Special Collections holds letters from Penelope Newell Law c. 1805-1810 concerning the Wellekens estate and the enslaved people attached to it, which appear to show a conflict between her and her father over his 'obligations', including the threat to launch a suit in Chancery in 1807.

  1. Letter from Penelope Newell Law to William Berry: Desires that Mr Ferrier establish how many slaves belonged to Willikens estate [Jamaica], property of her father [William Hepburn].
