Biography

  1. HERE LYES INTERR'D MR. GERALD BERMINGHAM OF THE NOBLE AND ANTIENT FAMILY OF ATHENRY OF THE KINGDOM OF IRELAND HE WAS A MAN OF STRICT VIRTUE AND PRUDENCE ; FAITHFULL TO HIS TRUSTS AND SINCERE IN HIS FRIENDSHIPS, TO WHOSE MEMORY HIS RELICT MRS. ANNE BERMINGHAM ERECTED THIS MONUMENT. HE DIED DECEMBER THE 11th 1742 AGED 48 YEARS.

  2. The will of Gerard Bermingham was proved in Jamaica in 1741 [sic?]. Gerrald Bermingham of St Thomas-in-the-Vale, planter. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1743. Slave-ownership at probate: 84 of whom 48 were listed as male and 36 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £5942.88 Jamaican currency of which £2521 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £589.71 currency cash, £686.52 currency debts and £43.05 currency plate.

  3. An entry in the Accounts Produce for rum, cattle and provisions in 1743 was filed by Ann Bermingham, widow, executrix of Gerald Bermingham and guardian to Elizabeth Ann Bermingham a minor. She was bequeathed "a handsome chased gold watch and chain of the value of 30 guineas" in the will of John Burke (d.c. 1752) as the daughter of "my friend Gerald Bermingham deceased". This was the Elizabeth Ann Bermingham who married Francis Delap in St Catherine, 09/01/1753. She is probably the Elizabeth Ann Dellap, buried in St Catherine, 19/07/1754.

  4. Gerald Bermingham was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 1 acre of land in St Catherine and 421 acres of land in St Thomas-in-the-Vale, total 422 acres.
