Biography

London merchant, partner in Milligan Robertson. Son of Robert Milligan (1746-1809, q.v.).

  1. David, son of Robert and Jean Milligan of John Street, baptised in St Andrew, Holborn, 25/05/1789.

  2. Memorial inscription in St Catherine's Cathedral, Jamaica: "SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF DAVID MILLIGAN ESQUIRE SON OF THE LATE ROBERT MILLIGAN ESQUIRE OF LONDON MERCHANT, BORN IN THAT CITY THE 27th OF APRIL 1789 DIED IN JAMAICA AFTER A SHORT ILLNESS ON THE 16th OF FEBRUARY 1818. HE LEFT HIS OWN COUNTRY TO ATTEND UPON A BELOVED BROTHER, WHO DIED AT SEA ON HIS WAY TO THIS ISLAND FOR THE RECOVERY OF HIS HEALTH AND WHOM HE SURVIVED ONLY A FEW MONTHS. HE WAS A MAN OF STRICT INTEGRITY, HUMANE, GENEROUS, DISINTERESTED AND AFFECTIONATE, ESTEEMED BY HIS FRIENDS, AND BELOVED BY HIS FAMILY; AT WHOSE DESIRE THIS MEMORIAL." Described in the Royal Gazette as “A gentleman of the most amiable manners and deportment [who] had acquired the esteem of everyone who had the pleasure of his acquaintance during his short residence in this island”.

  3. Will of David Milligan merchant of Fenchurch Street [made Setp. 1817] proved 19/06/1818. He left his honoured mother Mrs Jean Milligan an annuity of £1000 p.a. and his cousin Robert Milligan Dalzell £3428 15s 7d standing to his [the testator's] credit in the books of Milligan Robertson at 30/04/1816. He left 100 guineas to each of his sisters Jean Hughan, Justina Milligan and Mary Milligan and his brothers Duncan Davidson Milligan and William Milligan; his residuary heirs were his two married brothers Robert Milligan and Henry Davidson Milligan.
