Biography

Glasgow merchant, partner with his brothers Archibald Smith of Jordanhill and John Smith of Craigend (each of whom q.v.).

  1. 'James Smith of Craighead...loaned capital to both family and the firm [of Leitch & Smith]. When he died in 1815, he left £71,027 in moveable property including over £50,000 in Leitch & Smith, of which £20,000 was a loan. James also provided capital on bond which allowed younger members to enter the business.'
