Biography

MP for Salisbury 1754-1764. Brother of Alderman William Beckford (q.v.) and father of Peter Beckford of Stepleton (q.v.). Julines Beckford bought the Stepleton Iwerne estate in Dorset in 1745 and remodelled the house and landscaped the grounds.

  1. Julines Beckford was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 5007 acres of land in Hanover and 3190 acres of land in Westmoreland, total 8197 acres.

  2. Julines Beckford of Hanover, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1765. Slave-ownership at probate: 662 of whom 305 were listed as male and 357 as female. 204 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £34327.88 Jamaican currency of which £23990 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £1947.18 currency debts and £1292.84 currency plate.
