1742 - 25th May 1806
Bristol merchant, sugar-refiner and banker, MP for Bristol 1781-1784, Mayor 1786-1787, and slave-owner on Montserrat. Although the History of Parliament shows him as 's.p.', his will clearly shows a son, also George (q.v. under 'George Daubeny IV') and four daughters. He briefly espoused the abolitionist cause in 1788 before reverting to anti-abolition in 1789.
Will of George Daubeny of Redland in the parish of Westbury upon Trym, Gloucestershire, proved 05/08/1806. Under the will he left £3500 to his daughter Maria Elizabeth Dymock, the wife of William Dymock of Bristol, which [he noted] with the £2500 already given her and a further £4000 settled in trust on her and her children under the will brought his total provision for her to £10,000; he left £1000 and £4000 in trust to his daughter Elizabeth wife of the Rev. Andrew Daubeny, which together with to sums of £2500 previously given to her and her husband on their marriage similarly brought the provision to her to £10,000. He left a further £10,000 in trust for each of his daughters Martha and Joanna, of which £4000 was for life and then to her children. He had settled £5000 on his son George on the latter's first marriage, and having given the latter's father-in-law Mr Matthews reason to expect he would settle as much again on his [the testator's] decease, he left a further £5000 'from my sugar-refining business' to George, as well as his share in Messrs Daubeny, Daniel, Caves and Ames, his share in his sugar-refining business, his 12 shares in the Bristol Fire Office, his 30 shares in the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, 'and also all my interest in a certain estate in the island of Montserrat, being one-fifth part of two-thirds thereof and one quarter part of the remaining one-third part of the claim upon the said estate conveyed to me by T.B. Barzey [?] of that island and it is my will that the agency of Receivership of the rents thereof shall be conducted by my said son for the benefit of himself and the other parties interested namely my Brothers and Sister.'
George Daubeny held three several annuities of £50 p.a. each for the lives of his daughters Maria Elizabeth, Martha and Elizabeth Innis on the Nevis property of John Abel Ward under an indenture of 1774. These claims were noted in 1834 but were not included in a list published in 1860 of claims upheld in an 1837 Chancery decision.
