Jane Rutherford (née McGuffog)

1763 - 1835

Biography

  1. Born in 1763 "in Craig", Balmaclellan, Kirkcudbrightshire, Jane was the third of four daughters of David McGuffog and his wife Margaret Mains. Since David McGuffog was not the proprietor of Craig it would seem likely that he was a substantial tenant of the owners of the 1760s, one of the Galloway Gordon families. Jane and two of her sisters are mentioned in the will of James McGuffog of Stamford, Lincolnshire, in 1828 (proved 1829) and one sister was bequeathed items in the will of his widow (proved 1840).

  2. Wife of John Rutherford (widowed from at least 1817). Owned Sue River estate in St Mary, Jamaica, or at least held it under some system of trust. Four children named in her will - John, Maria Catherine, Elizabeth Margaret and Jane. Elizabeth Margaret was born in December 1788 and baptised in January 1789 in Kingston, Jamaica. Two other baptisms: Wilhelmina in Kingston in 1787 and Lydia Rutherford in Kingston in 1790. The daughter Jane married Allan Bell in St George, Jamaica, in 1817. William Wemyss Anderson was a business associate of Jane's brother James. John Rutherford senior died in St Mary, Jamaica, in 1816.
