James Cruikshank

Biography

  1. Reputed son of John Cruikshank of Ballard's Valley and Berry Hill Pen, both in St Mary, Jamaica. Inherited a moiety of these estates, subject to £10,000 for his sister Mary Cruikshank.

  2. Inscription in Marylebone church: James Cruikshank 'of Ballard's Valley St Mary's in the Island of Jamaica and of Jamaica and of Gloucester Street Portman Square London', erected by his widow. d. 25/11/1831 aged 30 [sic]: but also shows his daughter Mary Dansey d. 1830 aged 33. Gentleman's Magazine No. 569 1831 shows James Cruikshank dying in Gloucester St 25/11/1831 aged 69. James Cruikshank had inherited with his brother Capt John (d. 1812) from father John Cruikshank of St Mary now of Percy St, as 'reputed' sons. Plaque describes James Cruikshank as 'a kind husband, an affectionate parent, a steadfast friend, and an honourable member of society'.
