Biography

Partner and brother of Jacob Barrow (q.v.). His will indicates significant wealth at death.

  1. The will of Joseph Barrow [formerly of the parish of St Michael Barbados but at now] of Bury Street, St Mary Axe [made in 1804 with two codicils of 1806] was proved 05/09/1806. He left monetary legacies to a range of Jewish charities and institutions, and all 'my negro and mulatto slave [sic] either here or in the island of Barbados (except Quaco and my coloured boy Richard)' to his wife Sarah. He provided for the manumission of Richard Barrow and asked that if his wife Sarah return to Barbados [implicitly with Richard Barrow] the manumission be regularised in England before she left. He left £200 each at 21 to two 'mulatto girls' lately manumitted by him, Nancy Juddy [?] and Betsey Ann, and an annuity of £50 each. He left £5000 each to his three sisters, together with the debts owed to him by William Massiah; Charles St John; James Martin King; John Price; and Henry Devenish Watts. He left £8000 in trust for his niece Bella Barrow. He said he had become a partner with Isaac Baruch Lousada in Barrow & Lousada after the death of his brother Jacob, and had advanced £10,000 to the firm. He instructed the firm be would up and left £6000 from his share to his sister-in-law Jael and then her children, and after a range of other monetary legacies the rest of his share to his partner Isaac Baruch Lousada. The residuary heir was his nephew Simon Barrow when of age.
