Biography

Owner (or joint owner) of Sportsmans Hall in Trelawny, Jamaica as heir of John Stockdale Brown. Brother of Letitia Dawson and Helen Brown (both q.v.).

The residuary legatees in his will were his sisters, who were to forfeit their share if either should refuse to manumit two enslaved women also named in the will.

William Hugh Brown of Sportsmans Hall estate, Trelawny, Jamaica, Esquire.

Payment of just debts and funeral expenses.

To nephew William Stockdale Brown £1000 Jamaican currency at age 21, the interest to accumulate for his benefit.

To Eliza Allardice, daughter of Mary Brown of Trelawny, £200 Jamaican currency.

To the slave Elory otherwise Eliza Dennis Brown, her freedom and all the privileges she now enjoys in the said estate during her life as far as my right and interest therein extend.

To our old nurse the slave Flora otherwise called Catherine Brown, her freedom.

I request that my sisters Letitia the wife of William Dawson a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy and Helen wife of John Brown of Falmouth Jamaica merchant and their respective husbands will join and concur in giving the two slaves their freedom. Any of them who refuse or neglect to do this shall forfeit all benefit intended for them in my will.

To Elory or Eliza Dennis Brown £8 Jamaican currency each year for life, charged on my estate.

All rest and residue to my two sisters as tenants in common for their own benefit independent of the debts of their respective husbands.

Two brothers-in-law to be executors.
