Biography

Sir John Trevelyan 4th bart., husband of Louisa Simond, owner of enslaved people on Grenada, father of Archdeacon George Trevelyan, John Trevelyan and Walter Trevelyan.

  1. Will of Sir John Treveylan of [Nettlecombe but currently residing in] Bath proved 07/01/1829. He left his land in England to his oldest son John Trevelyan of Wallington in the county of Northumberland, and said that in an indenture of 29 and 30/01/1819 he had conveyed to his then two younger sons the Rev. Walter Trevelyan vicar of Henbury and the Rev. George Trevelyan, rector of Nettlecombe and the Archdeacon of Taunton, lately deceased 'all my share right and interest whatsoever in and to the estates and property of Peter Simond Esq. my late father-in-law' and any other property he held in Grenada. In his will he ratified this and re-expressed the division of the Grenada property as to one moiety to Walter Trevelyan and one moiety to the children of the deceased George Trevelyan.

  2. The indenture of 29 and 30/01/1819 appears as follows in an index of the Hull History Centre: Deed of gift by release 30/01/1819 Between Sir John Trevelyan of Nettlecombe in the County of Somerset residing in the City of Bath; The Reverend Walter Trevelyan of Henbury in the County of Gloucester; Reverend George Trevelyan of Nettlecombe; John Ross of the island of Grenada and George Beare of the same island respecting deed of gift by release of certain shares of plantations in the island of Grenada.
