Biography

Eldest son of Richard Welch (c.1733-1782) and his wife Lucretia Mary Favel Dehany (1751-1813). Born 1770, barrister-at-law of Hyde estate; matriculated from Christ Church Oxford, 07/10/1786 aged 16; BA 1790; inherited Hyde estate upon his father's death in 1781. Married Alice Anne, daughter of Rev. Nathaniel Preston in 1792. Died 1809; buried at Swainston.

Richard Welch now residing in Upper Seymour Street, St Marylebone, Middlesex, Esquire.

All my estate personal and real to the payment of all just debts and funeral expenses and the legacies hereinafter bequeathed.

To my dear wife Alice Anne and all my children who may be living at the time of my decease all the personal estate in Jamaica except sugars and rum in the hands of my merchants or which may be on their passage to England and except the monies which may be due and owing.

The remainder of my estate real and personal to my friends Philip Dehany of Hayes Place, Kent, Esquire, and James Holder of Chilton House in Wiltshire, Esquire for the term of 99 years for the payment hereafter and when the said trusts shall be fulfilled it is my will that the term of 99 years shall cease. All the rest and residue of my estate for the use of my eldest son Arthur Welch and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten and in default of such for the use of my son Robert Gregory Welch and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten and in default of such then to all other sons I shall have in priority of age. In default of that I leave all my estates to the use of my daughters Mary Elizabeth Welch, Geraldine Welch and Anne Louisa Welch and any daughters I shall have hereafter equally share and share alike as tenants in common and to their heirs.

Philip Dehany and James Holder to manage conduct and carry on my plantation or sugar work called Hyde in the Island of Jamaica and the slaves, appurtenances and stock for the benefit and advantage of my estate. Out of the rents, issues and profits of my estate to pay and discharge all my lawful debts and also the following sums of money: to my younger son Robert Gregory Welch £5000 sterling and to each of my daughters £3000 sterling at the age of 21 or for my daughters at marriage if before the age of 21. If it is not expedient to pay the said portions then payments shall be postponed and interest at the rate of 5% shall be paid. If within 12 months after reaching the age of 21 my son Arthur shall think fit to make over to my son Robert Gregory his heirs forever one full and equal half part undivided of my said residuary estate then the said legacy of £5000 to Robert shall not be raised to paid to him.

Philip Dehany and James Holder and my dear wife Alice Anne to be the executors and the guardians of my children.
