William Gilpin

Biography

Described as "of London" when Robert Gilpin registered enslaved people on his behalf on Springfield in Hanover, Jamaica, in 1817. Not definitively further identified to date. It seems likely that this was William Gilpin I of East Sheen, probably Robert Gilpin's brother: although the will of William Gilpin of East Sheen [made in 1822 and proved 02/06/1823] is silent on Jamaica property, Springfield had changed hands after 1817. Willliam Gilpin I of East Sheen's main heir William Gilpin II was presumably the same man as William Gilpin of East Sheen who was trustee of the will [and probably nephew] of Mary Gilpin (q.v.) of Westbourne Place, proved in 1855. This second William Gilpin was Treasurer of Christ's Hospital and died of Palewell Lodge East Sheen as High Sheriff of Surrey in 1867 leaving £60,000.
