Son and heir of Robert Augustus Hale, and a correspondent of the Slave Compensation Commissioners concerning 'a gang of slaves' that had belonged to his father, for whom the compensation was paid to Elizabeth Hale (q.v., Hall in the compensation records, but almost certainly Elizabeth Hale or Hales) and Henry Adolphus Hawkins (q.v.) as co-trustees of Robert James Hale under the Content estate in St John Jamaica.

  1. Robert James Hale, age 31, bachelor, physician, of St John's Wood, son of Robert Augustus Hale Esquire, married Ann Warren, age 21, spinster of Marylebone, daughter of Robert Warren Esquire, in St Mary's, Marylebone, 17/02/1849. They had six children baptised in London: Robert Warren (born 1849, baptised 1850); Annie Orme (born and baptised 1851); Arthur Charles Augustus (baptised 1853); Sarah Louisa Adriana (born 1854, baptised 1855); Emily Ida Theodosia (born 1856, baptised 1858); and Frederick George (born and baptised 1858). The addresses given at the various baptisms were 3 Finchley Road (1850-1), Westbourne Terrace (1853-5) and 5 Upper Seymour Street (1858).

  2. In 1851 they were living at 3 Finchley Road, Marylebone, James's age given as 33, "Physician MD St Andrews", born Jamaica, and Ann age age 23, born Mill Hill.

  3. Robert James Hale was the freehold owner of Lot 58 in Wairoa, Auckland, New Zealand, in 1870-1.

  4. Robert James Hale was designated a Public Vaccinator in Wairoa in December 1873. He was registered as a medical practitioner in New Zealand 12/06/1874. He had been licensed by the Royal College of Physicians in London in 1849 and was granted an MD from St Andrews University in 1841.
