Biography

Anna Maria Duke née Storey, owner of enslaved persons in Barbados, at least some of whom were inherited from Frances B. Orderson (q.v.), the compensation for whom was awarded to her husband Rev. John Holloway Duke (q.v.).

  1. Born in Barbados c. 1810 to Benjamin Storey and Anna Maria Orderson. Inherited £150 from her maternal grandmother at age 18. The Frances B. Orderson from whom she inherited enslaved persons in Barbados may have been her great-aunt Frances Boaz Orderson, although Frances B. Orderson registered 1 enslaved person herself in 1834 and one source states she died a spinster in 1855.

  2. Anna Maria Storey married John Holloway Duke at Christ Church, Barbados, 19/04/1827. At least two children were baptised to this couple in Barbados: Benjamin Thomas (baptised 25/06/1829 at St Michael, Barbados) and Wilhelmina (baptised 11/07/1831 at Christ Church, Barbados). Later censuses reveal two more: Mary A., born in Essequibo c. 1838 and Eliza H., born c. 1839. Another daughter, Emma, married Rev. Joseph Thorlby of Helpingham in Froxfield on 18/04/1854.

  3. Anna Maria had moved to Froxfield, Wiltshire, by 1861 (also the place of her daughter's marriage in 1854, see 2., above.) In 1861 she was age 54, "Clergy Widow", born West Indies, living with her daughter Eliza H. [K.?] Duke, age 21, also born West Indies. In 1871 she was age 65, living alone at Steward's House, Fraxfield. In 1881 she was at the same address with her daughter Mary A. Duke, age 42, born in Essequibo. In 1891 she was at the same address, again with her daughter Mary A. Duke.

  4. Anna Maria Duke died 24/10/1891 at Froxfield. Her will was proved 30/11/1891 by her son and executor Benjamin Thomas Duke of West Hornington, Clerk to the visitors and Clerk and Steward of the Somerset and Bath Lunatic Asylum, personal effects under £76 19s 6d.
