T71/877: claim by Bertie E. Jervis. Counterclaim from Martha Fleming Ottley, of Testwood, Southampton, Hampshire, a spinster; Benjamin Travers, of Burton Street, St. George Hanover Sq., Middlesex, a surgeon; Joseph Travers, of St. Swithins Lane, London; Wm. King, of Brighton (Sussex); Rev. Henry Jonas Barton, of Crichlade, Wiltshire, 'interested under the will of Sarah Willett Hooker, formerly S.W. Ottley, & otherwise, £2689 3s 0d with interest at 6% from March last'. 'Consent from claimant that compensat. money be transferred in to the names of BT, JT, WK and HJB'; 'consent from MFO one of the above counterclaim that the compensation money be paid to the parties named in the consent of claimant above set forth'.

T71/1609: letter, dated 05/12/1834, from Croome & Sons, on behalf of Mrs Lynch, 'who has a mortgage on Marble Hill Estate & Plantation' (wrongly numbered as 125 by the Commission).

James A. Thome and Joseph H. Kimball, Emancipation in the West Indies: A six months' tour in Antigua, Barbadoes, and Jamaica in the year 1837 (New York, American Anti-slavery Society, 1838): the authors met 'Colonel Jarvis', proprietor of 3 estates and member of the privy council, who 'said he was in England at the time the bill for immediate emancipation passed in the legislature'.

The background to the contest is in Vere Langford Oliver, The history of the island of Antigua, one of the Leeward Caribbees in the West Indies, from the first settlement in 1635 to the present time (London, Mitchell and Hughes, 1894) Vol. 2 pp. 295-296 - an indenture of 1787 between James Nibbs of Antigua and Sarah Willett Ottley of Testwood near Southampton, spinster, with Marble Hill as security.
