Biography

One of a group of successful counterclaimants on Marble Hill on Antigua, the Rev Henry Jonas Barton of Crichlade, Wiltshire, Clerk., 'interested under the will of Sarah Willett Hooker, formerly S.W. Ottley, & otherwise, £2689 3s 0d with interest at 6% from March last'. No firm path to the award has been identified: he was possibly one of the trustees of the marriage settlement of Caroline Travers and Rev. John Bridges Ottley (ne Hooker).

  1. Henry Jonas Barton, son of James and Eleanor Barton, born 21/02/1797 and baptised 08/03/1797 in St John's, Preston, Lancashire. His father was a clergyman, of Aldringham, Lancashire. Matriculated Brasenose College, Oxford, 1814, BA 1818, MA 1820. Married Emma Elizabeth Warner in St Mary's, Reading, Berkshire, 01/05/1827. A daughter, Elizabeth Emma, baptised in 1828 in Wellesbourne, Warwickshire, also given as parents' abode. Vicar of Latton, Wiltshire, from 1830. Children Charles John (1832), Eleanor Catherine (1833) and Mordaunt (1835) baptised in Latton. Vicar of Wicken, Northamptonshire, from 1838 until his death. Adaughter, Isabel Mary (1840), baptised in Wicken and buried there that same year. In the census of 1841 he was living at the Rectory in Wicken, age 63, with his wife and four eldest children. At the same address in 1851, 1861 and 1871.

  2. Will of Rev. Henry Jonas Barton of Wicken Rectory Northamptonshire who died 27/08/1872 proved 04/10/1872, efffects under £4,000. Death registered Q3 1872 Pottersbury Northants. He owned shares in the Great Western Railway at the time of his death.
