Jevons Colloquia are a policy project of UCL Faculty of Laws which continues the tradition of the Jevons Institute for Competition Law and Economics was founded in 2006 by Antonio Bavasso and David Evans.
Our aim is to stimulate debate concerning the application of competition law and industry regulation to the marketplace; and promote interaction among academic scholars in law and economics, policymakers and enforcement officials, the judiciary, practitioners and business leaders. Our approach in this area of law and policy is based on a strong interaction between legal principles and analysis and applied economic theory and empirics.
Jevons Colloquia have developed a reputation as a forum for discussion at the cutting edge of competition law and regulation internationally with an interdisciplinary approach and a distinctive style of debate amongst experts (who often refer to “Jevons debates”) characterised by openness of thought, inclusiveness and high quality-participation.
Jevons has been a major force in promoting reforms of competition policy, particularly the injection of sound economic reasoning, in the EU/UK in the last 15 years through gathering officials, judges, academics from diverse countries and institutions, and has taken a similar role in the US.
- Who was William Jevons?
The Jevons Institute has been named after William Stanley Jevons, one of the foremost economists of the 19th Century.
William Stanley Jevons was one of the foremost economists of the 19th century. He was one of the main British contributors to the marginalist revolution in economic thought of the 1870s and one of the founders of modern economic science.
Aside from his pathbreaking worth as a theorist, Jevons helped pioneer the practical use of economic statistics and was on the first exponents of modern econometric methods. Jevons was a student at the college and went on to become a Professor at UCL.
