Siyu joined UCL as a PhD student in September 2022. Siyu’s PhD project seeks to understand how various non-state actors (‘NSAs’) influence states in implementing their climate obligations, focusing on a specific body of international rules at the intersection of trade and climate change: provisions and commitments addressing climate change under free trade agreements (‘FTAs’). It pays particular attention to established channels for NSA involvement under FTAs, such as domestic advisory groups and private petition procedures, aiming to give an empirical account of their practical operation and dissecting their limits and potential in the trade-climate change context.
In addition to trade law, Siyu has gained research experience in competition law and international financial law. She was a student researcher for a project on the extraterritoriality of domestic laws funded by the National Social Science Fund of China, where she worked primarily on a sub-project on international antitrust cooperation. Her internship at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank was partly dedicated to a research project on the use of domestic laws and institutions in multilateral development banks’ sovereign-backed loan operations.
