Research summary

Magda's work focuses on various aspects of English and comparative private law, particularly personal property, contract, trust, Equity, commercial law and commercial remedies. 

She is the author of The Law of Tracing in Commercial Transactions (OUP 2018), which was shortlisted for the Peter Birks Prize for Outstanding Scholarship, chapters on tracing in the context of secured transactions (in Gullifer, Akseli (eds) Secured Transactions Law Reform: Principles, Policies and Practice (Hart, 2016)) and on comparative law of tracing and real subrogation in Civilian jurisdictions (in Smith (ed), The Worlds of the Trust (CUP, 2013)). She co-authored various chapters (with Professor Louise Gullifer) on secured transactions in Gullifer, Akseli (eds), Secured Transactions Law Reform: Principles, Policies and Practice (Hart, 2016) and McKnight, Paterson and Zakrzewski on The Law of International Finance (OUP 2017). Magda regularly presents at conferences across the world, including the annual conferences of the Society of Legal Scholars, Obligations (Hong Kong), International Property Law Conference (Pretoria), The Worlds of the Trust (Montreal), Modern Studies in Property Law (London). She also engaged with policy makers. In November 2018, at the invitation of the Ministry of Justice of Korea, she spoke on 'Getting Credit' at the International Conference on Ease of Doing Business in Seoul, Korea.

As part of the Secured Transactions Law Reform Project, Magda has authored policy papers on aspects of reform in the area (securedtransactionslawreformproject.org). She also contributes to the work on the Secured Transactions Code issued by the Financial Law Committee, City of London Law Society. 

Teaching summary

Magda teaches Commercial Law, Commercial Remedies, as well as International and Comparative Secured Transactions. She has also taught contract law, trusts, and various business law modules, including international trade law. 

She held appointments as a Visiting Lecturer at the Deutsche Richterakademie in Trier (German Judicial Academy).

Biography


Magda is an associate professor at UCL and a deputy Executive Director of the Secured Transactions Law Reform Project. 


She holds a PhD (UEA, fully funded with the Faculty of Social Science Scholarship Diploma in Law (UEA), Magister Iuris degree (cum laude) from Collegium Iuridicum at University of Lodz in Poland, having graduated with a medal for outstanding academic achievements, and has held various academic awards: the Polish Ministry of Education award and the Prime Minister’s awards. She also holds a diploma in French Law (University of Tours) and has studied aspects of Comparative Law at Faculté Internationale de Droit Comparé in Strasbourg, and at University of Maastricht. 


Magda is a member of the Advisory Board (Secured Transactions) of the City of London Law Society Financial Law Committee.


Magda is also a member of the LexisPSL Banking & Finance Consulting Editorial Board.
