UCL Laws LLB students awarded Laidlaw Scholarships

13 June 2023

The Laidlaw Scholarship programme gives students from across the UK the opportunity to gain leadership training and undertake research and leadership projects.

Aailiya and Dimi

Aaliya Roy Kundal (LLB Law) and Dimi Georgieva (LLB with French Law) have each been awarded the Laidlaw Scholarship.

The Laidlaw Research and Leadership Programme runs at 14 leading universities across the globe, creating a large network of past and present scholars, and is funded by the Laidlaw Foundation. As part of the programme, scholars will undertake research projects in a field of interest to them to help build their leadership and research skills.

Dimi's project will take a deeper look into contract law. Specifically, the project look at the doctrine of undue influence within the family context. By undertaking a comparative analysis, it will observe how different sociocultural norms shape the interpretation of the doctrine and influence case outcomes, particularly for women. The project aims to help with understanding why a disconnect can exist between legal theory and its practical consequences once implemented.

Aaliya's project, titled 'Judging the Future: Artificial Intelligence and Stakeholder Response in the Legal Industry', is based on a literature review and qualitative interview-based research that compares the reception of AI (by lawyers and judges) in the UK and in India. The project will attempt to establish the existence of a divide that exists between a developed and a developing nation in their willingness and capacity to introduce this technology in the sector.
