28 June 2023

The events provided a welcome opportunity for alumni to catch up with former classmates and friends in person, as well as speak to prospective students about their time studying at UCL.

Last month, Professor Eloise Scotford (Dean of UCL Laws) and Professor Olga Thomas (Vice Dean (Education) and Director of Education at UCL Laws) visited Hong Kong and Singapore for a series of events attended by prospective students and offer holders at UCL Laws, and by alumni from across UCL.

On Wednesday 3 May, prospective students and parents were welcomed to the Stephenson Harwood offices in the United Centre, Hong Kong, for the event hosted by Katherine Liu (Partner and UCL Laws LLB alumna). Professor Thomas delivered a presentation on studying law at UCL, followed by an exciting taster lecture on ‘How to get away with murder’ with brilliant engagement from the students present. Prospective students and parents were also given an opportunity to ask questions about studying at UCL at an informal Q&A session. A reception followed with many Laws alumni enjoying meeting again in person, sharing reflections of their time studying at UCL Laws and displaying the warmth and success of the vibrant UCL Laws alumni community in Hong Kong.

Professor Scotford led a CPD seminar on ‘Climate Change Law and Policy: Lessons from the EU and UK’, attended by UCL alumni and staff at Stephenson Harwood. Katherine Liu shared her thoughts on the positive impact of her time studying law at UCL, before Evangeline Quek (Managing Partner) made some closing remarks on the importance of sustainability to the firm’s legal practice and gave thanks to the organisers and attendees.

A video of the event has been kindly produced by the UCL Alumni Hong Kong Club, which can be viewed on their Facebook page.

As part of the visit, Professor Scotford and Professor Thomas also met with partner universities that run joint undergraduate programmes with UCL Laws, including HKU Law and NUS Law.

The events would not have been possible without the support of our alumni, organisers and hosts at Stephenson Harwood and Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow, and particular thanks go to Katherine Liu and James Huang.
