Dr Veale featured in PoliticsHome podcast episode on internet safety

17 February 2023

The latest podcast episode discussed the government’s ongoing attempts to use the Online Safety Bill to take on big tech companies and safeguard people on the internet.

Michael Veale

Dr Michael Veale, Associate Professor at UCL Laws, appeared on the latest episode of The Rundown podcast alongside Baroness Nicky Morgan (former Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport) and Lord Wilf Stevenson (Shadow Spokesperson for Culture, Media and Sport).

The Online Safety Bill is a significant proposed piece of legislation that has been debated and developed for many years. Dr Veale claims that the Online Safety Bill may need to better consider the size and shape of the internet we want, considers the powers it grants governments that can undermine encryption, and debates the feasibility of some of the technologies it assumes to exist, including accurate content detection systems using AI.
