Prof Virginia Mantouvalou delivers Stefan Cross Centre for Women, Equality and Law Annual Lecture

6 May 2022

Professor Mantouvalou delivered her lecture on ‘Structural Injustice, Precarious Work and Human Rights’ at the University of Southampton.

Professor Virginia Mantouvalou

On Wednesday 4 May, Professor Virginia Mantouvalou (Professor of Human Rights and Labour Law at UCL Laws) delivered the annual Stefan Cross Centre for Women, Equality and Law Lecture at Southampton Law School, University of Southampton.

The lecture is based on her project ‘Structural Injustice, Workers’ Rights and Human Rights’, funded by the British Academy through a Mid-Career Fellowship.

An increasing number of jobs are precarious, making workers vulnerable to exploitation and abuse by their employers. The UK Government’s main approach has been to criminalise the actions of unscrupulous employers. In her lecture, Professor Mantouvalou proposed an alternative solution, seeking to identify structures that force and trap workers in exploitative work.

Her forthcoming monograph on the topic will be published by Oxford University Press.

A recording of the lecture is available to watch on the University of Southampton website.
