30 March 2021

Dr Chris O'Meara's new book entitled Necessity and Proportionality and the Right of Self-Defence in International Law has been published by Oxford University Press.

Necessity and Proportionality and the Right of Self-Defence in International Law began life as Dr O’Meara's doctoral thesis, which he wrote at UCL Laws under the supervision of Professor Kimberley Trapp (Professor of Public International Law).

Forming part of the Oxford Monographs in International Law series, the book offers a detailed account of the customary international law requirements of necessity and proportionality, which condition the exercise of a state’s right of self-defence. It provides much needed clarity regarding the contemporary scope and substance of these requirements and proposes a novel framework to guide their operation and appraisal.

Dr O’Meara studied for an LLM (Master of Laws) at UCL Laws between 2013-14, before commencing his PhD (2014-18). He was recently appointed to a permanent lectureship at the University of Exeter.
