Tom Hickman, Reader at UCL Laws, to represent Gina Miller in challenge to prorogation
4 September 2019
Tom Hickman QC will tomorrow begin representing campaigner Gina Miller in the challenge to prorogation in the Divisional Court.
The case will be a challenge to the decision of the Prime Minister to prorogue Parliament for five weeks until 18 October 2019. The team will say that the proration unjustifiably undermines Parliamentary sovereignty and is a justiciable public law power.
Tom was part of Gina Miller’s legal team in 2016-17 when she brought a legal case that forced parliament to legislate before Article 50 could be invoked. In January 2017, Tom, along with UCL Laws colleague Professor Jeff King, were praised by Lord David Pannick QC as providing the ‘origins of the litigation’ in the landmark Brexit ruling.
In November 2018 Gina Miller delivered the UCL Laws Annual Mishcon Lecture on ‘What is Truth?’
