Bentham Development

Tour guests had the possibility to see work that has been done in the Student Hub and teaching rooms so far, and find to out more about the benefits and challenges of the project, and what is still to come.

UCL Laws invited a small group of students to take part in filming for the website and UCL social media channels, and tell their experiences of Bentham House whilst visiting the site.

Firoza Dodhi, LLM student and Secretary of the UCL Law Society Committee, said:

‘Touring Bentham House as it rapidly reaches the end of restorations was an absolutely incredible experience! I spent the first year of my LLB studying at Bentham House. I experienced first-hand, the sense of community and collegiate environment that is synonymous with UCL Laws. The redeveloped Bentham House promises to continue to embrace that unique identity: linking the tradition of our past with modern convenience that enhances our student experience.’

Chirs Tilley, Special Projects Consultant, started the tour by escorting the guests via Bentham House old stairs to the  second floor where they crossed the bridge to the Hong Kong Room (Room 221), ready to listen to Matthew Goulcher, Managing Director of Levitt Bernstein, the architects working on transforming Bentham House.

Amongst the tour attendees, there were also UCL Laws alumni, who were attending the Bentham Association Presidential Address and Dinner in the evening, UCL Laws academics and members of the incoming UCL Law Society committee.

Amrit Singh Gill, LLB student and Incoming President of the UCL Law Society, said:

‘It was a great experience to really understand the motivations of the design and the direction that a rejuvenated Bentham House will take. As incoming President of the UCL Law Society, I am confident that this restructuring will be incredibly well received by the student population and will provide a real sense of unity as we return to our Faculty home.’

Oliver James, LLB student and First Year Representative of the UCL Law Society, said:

‘This regeneration project is something very exciting to have seen first-hand. The experience of visiting the site shows how much great change has been made to the building, and how the future learning environment is perfectly tailored to the student. It is a fantastic space with incredible promise and I cannot wait to be based there for the rest of my studies.’

Transforming UCL

The redevelopment of Bentham House has been delivered by UCL Estates as part of Transforming UCL, the largest capital programme in the university’s history.

Transforming UCL will see substantial investment of over £1.2 billion over a 10-year period to refurbish and develop some of UCL’s most iconic buildings whilst also bringing forward new world class buildings. Together these will enable and support the University’s continued growth.
