UCL Laws celebrates Bentham House redevelopment topping out milestone

26 January 2017

Dame Hazel

The redevelopment of Bentham House, the home of UCL Laws, has reached an important construction milestone, with the building reaching its full height of 44.863m, with the topping out witnessed by Professor Dame Hazel Genn, Dean of UCL Laws.

The £21.7 million redevelopment, which UCL received planning approval and Listed Building Consent for in October 2014, is now in its final year of construction, with staff and students due to return to Bentham House in late 2017. The finished building will offer an additional 1500sqm, increasing to 5000sqm, and will house over 100 members of staff, 1000 students and specialist research and pro-bono initiatives in over 180 rooms.

Professor Dame Hazel Genn said: “I am so pleased to have been able to witness the pouring of the concrete which signified the topping out of the redeveloped Bentham House, and to be able to see first-hand how well the project is progressing. Our staff, students and wider UCL Laws community have long awaited the improved space and facilities that the redevelopment will offer, and I’m delighted we are another step closer to returning home to Bentham House”.

The redevelopment of Bentham House is part of the wider Transforming UCL building and refurbishment project, the largest capital programme in the University’s history. It will see substantial investment of over £1.2 billion over a 10 year period to refurbish and develop some of UCL’s most iconic buildings whilst also bringing forward new world class buildings.
