Dr Sappor was a panellist in the session at the UK Pavilion summit as part of EXPO 2020 Dubai. Chaired by IOE alumna and 2018 Global Teacher Prize winner Andria Zafirakou, the discussion covered how to select, train and develop teachers; what the qualities of an amazing teacher are; and how teachers can adapt for the AI, data driven workplace of the future.

Other panellists in the discussion included Tony McAleavy, Research Director, Education Development Trust and Vikas Pota, Founder, T4 Education.

Dr Sappor said: “It has been widely argued that the single most powerful factor that makes some schools better than others is the quality of its teachers and their teaching. We focused on what great teachers do and what sets them apart from other teachers. We discussed some of the skills, knowledge and understanding that great teachers possess and their qualities.

“It was great being part of the event and highlighting IOE’s research, which is crucial to informing how we can continue to educate the next generation of teachers.”

Dr Gideon Sappor is a teacher and a psychologist, specialising in child development and psychology of education. He is a Lecturer (Teaching) in Early Years and Primary Education at IOE. Prior to working in Higher Education, Gideon spent over 11 years as a primary school teacher, working in schools in London and Medway.
